Snook Season is open!

Snook Season officially opened on February 1! At a limit of one fish per day between 28”-32” this is one tasty fish. Although many anglers practice catch and release only on snook due to the incredible fight, acrobatics and risk of loss to cold snaps, this is one of the tastiest fish you’ll ever eat.

Snook will hang in groups or ride solo in the very back of creeks on mid and rocks during the winter. As the water warms they move out of their nooks to mangrove edges and current runs to feed. Snook are one of the most exciting fish to hook and fight due to their punishing eat to electric runs.

In Crystal River we sight cast these fish with an array of flies and artificial lures. You can also chuck bait and live bait them too if you want to sit in deeper water but that takes away from the prestige of the nature coast. Crystal River offers some of the best snook fishing opportunities for some of the biggest snook in the world. Come join Turtlehead Charters for a snook trip soon!!

Here are some cool facts about snook:

  • Snook have dark lines down their side due to being mostly nocturnal feeders using that line to sense movement in the water

  • Snook are most active in the early mornings and evenings, especially during a rising tide.

  • The peak snook season takes place from April through July.

  • The bite is particularly hot in May, June, July.
